68 students had an amazing 6-day trip to Canberra over the course of Week 4. Blessed with great weather, they explored key sites like Government House, Parliament House, and more, delving into Australia’s history, democracy and culture. On the trip to Government House, one group was able to meet His Excellency David Hurley, the Governor General of Australia. The Year 7s camped by the amazing Murrumbidgee River. They enjoyed visits to Questacon and the Flip Out trampoline park. Despite the long bus journey, students valued quality time with friends. We are grateful to the Australian Government for their contribution in funding the camp under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program.

On Thursday November 2, the Year 7/8 Boys Cricket team ventured to the Blue Lake Sports Park to compete in a Twenty20 match against Millicent High School. St Martins had a mix of experienced and new cricketers. They bowled well, restricting Millicent to 90 runs. Notable performances include Les Jagger, Samuel Ellis, Josh Vanderhorst and Will Dower. The batters started carefully, and despite only losing one wicket through the innings they couldn’t get enough runs, losing by 9. The boys played in great spirit, representing St Martins with pride

The last day of Term 3 saw the College community come together and celebrate the art that is music! Middle and Senior school students formed their own bands and went head-to-head in the second ever ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition, with the winner this year being ‘Rewind’. Congratulations to all students who participated, it takes a lot of courage to go on stage and perform in front of a crowd. A special thank you goes to Louise Adams, Jodi Swiggs and Peter Loring for judging the students and giving amazing feedback.

On September 15 and 16, the St Martins Pedal Prix team competed in the final race for this year, the feature event, being the 24-hour race in Murray Bridge. This is a significant increase in effort for the students in comparison to the previous races, as the next longest race is only 8 hours. Students competed admirably with all three trikes completing the race. A big thank you to the support crew of teachers and parents, without whom this race would not be possible.

Results:
Carbonated – Middle School (S2) finished 55 out of 152, 6 out of 44 trikes in category.
War War – Middle School (S2) finished 84 out of 152, 15 out of 44 trikes in category.
Anything but Orange – 100 out of 152, 34 out of 36 in category.

The Year 9 & 10 German students recently visited Hahndorf and the Barossa Valley to learn more about the history of early German settlement in South Australia. In Hahndorf, they enjoyed Kaffee und Kuchen (coffee and cake) at Otto’s German Bakery, ordering in German of course, before visiting the German Migrant Museum and doing a historic walking tour of the town. They then drove to Tanunda in the Barossa Valley where the class stayed in cabins. During their stay, they did a digital Schnitzeljagd (treasure hunt) in Tanunda main street. Students also visited the historic Langmeil Cemetery where the class completed a grave hunt for key early settlers and visited the Kegelklub where they had a game of traditional German nine pin bowls using the original wooden alley from the late 1800’s. They followed this up with a game of 10 pin bowls at the modern bowling alley to compare the difference. Students also did some research at Luhr’s pioneer Cottage in Light Pass and viewed the enormous painted wine barrels at Chateau Dorrien Winery which tell the German migration story. They ate German hotdogs, pretzels and schnitzel and enjoyed board games, night walks, and a German TV sitcom. On the way home, the class stopped at the Herbig family tree. The Herbig family lived with their children in the trunk of this tree for the first 2 years of their marriage until they had enough money to build a mud cottage. Students enjoyed all things German on this trip, learned a lot, and had heaps of fun.
