Following a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony with First Nations Elder Uncle Doug, students enjoyed two hour-long interactive sessions. Uncle Doug taught the students about Indigenous Culture and the Seasonal Calendar and Damien and Vanessa from Landscape South Australia Limestone Coast took the groups on a nature walk, observing and identifying the Stringybark Woodland Habitat.

Year 4s escape the classroom to connect with our country’s Indigenous heritage.

In Week 8, the classes ventured to Port MacDonnell with Uncle Ken, who shared his Boandik knowledge with the group. They spent time walking along the beach and collecting items of interest, before sculpting in the sand to show what they had learnt over the day.
As always, it wouldn’t be a trip to the beach without a visit to the Fish and Chip shop for some hot chips before returning to town.

The College’s Year 9/10 Photography classes are currently studying Food Photography. This week, students took part in an excursion to the Royal Copenhagen Ice Creamery to provide students with attractive food to photograph. The students experimented with camera settings, viewing angles, lighting and composition. Copenhagen is always a popular choice due to their amazingly presented food, that tastes fantastic as well. Food Photography is popular in a range of settings, such as social media, advertising and in other online settings. The students had a great time photographing their own dishes as well as the dishes of their classmates. The highlight of the excursion was, of course, when it was time to eat.

On Thursday March 6 , the St Martins Year 9 & 10 Agriculture students visited The Union Dairy Company (UDC) in Penola. The aim of the excursion was to inspect the processes from “Grass to Glass”, and the impact innovation has in these processes. After a briefing on arrival of the history of the UDC, its purpose and connected corporations, the students were kitted up in their glamorous PPE and guided through a tour by employees in order to get a greater understanding of process, safety, maintenance, and quality control. At the end of the tour, the staff and students were treated with a Nippy’s Milk – one of the companies the UDC supplies. The Agriculture Staff and Students in attendance would like to thank the team at UDC for giving up their time to give such an in-depth and insightful tour. It is terrific for the students to see the breadth of employment opportunities at local businesses within the Agriculture sector.
